Enrollment

  • Charter schools represent 1/3 of total public schools in Oakland Unified School District (OUSD)
  • 17,000 students are served by Oakland charter public schools, 20% of whom are Black, 57% Latinx, and 71% who are eligible for free or reduced price lunch.

 

Academic Performance

  • Charter school students outperformed traditional public school students on state testing in 2018-19.
  • In both English Language Arts and Math, charter students performed closer to the met standard.
  • In 2019-20, 91% of charter public school students in OUSD graduated.
  • The highest performing school in OUSD is a charter public school, Yu Ming Charter.

 

School Culture and Climate

  • In 2018-19, OUSD charter public school chronic absenteeism rates were lower than the state average.
  • For Black students, OUSD charter public schools had a 21% chronic absentee rate, as opposed to traditional public schools which saw a 43% rate during the 2018-19 year.
