Community Schools In Action: Building Futures at Health Sciences High

For many students in inner-city San Diego, working in healthcare feels like a distant dream—something other people do, not something they can accomplish.

But Health Sciences High and Middle College (HSHMC) is making that happen for thousands of students who walk through their campus doors.

Instead of just reading about careers in a textbook, students at HSHMC find themselves stepping into them. In class, they are learning the foundations of health science. Beyond the classroom, they’re exploring real-world settings—connecting with professionals and gaining hands-on experience through partnerships with local healthcare providers like Sharp HealthCare.

For the first time, college—and a career—feels within reach.

That’s the difference at Health Sciences High, a public charter school that operates as a community school.

Students don’t have to wait to imagine their future. They start building their future the moment they enroll.

From patient care to emergency response pathways, students gain exposure to careers that once may have felt out of reach. Many also take college courses while still in high school, giving them a head start and the confidence to take their next steps.

But what truly sets Health Sciences High apart is how it supports the whole student.

As a community school, the focus goes beyond academics. The school brings together education, health and social services, and strong family partnerships—ensuring students have the support they need both inside and outside the classroom.

Because for many students, success isn’t just about what happens during the school day. It’s about having access to resources, feeling supported, and knowing there are people who believe in you.

At Health Sciences High, that support is built into the culture. HSHMC 3Health Sciences High and Middle College serves grades 9-12 that focuses on high interest, high need, and high-wage careers. -Photo courtesy of HSHMC.

The school is designed to feel like a home away from home—a place where students are known, supported, and encouraged to reach their full potential.

Staff build strong relationships with students, offering personalized guidance on both college and career pathways. Whether a student is exploring their options or already focused on a specific goal, they are met with support that reflects their individual journey.

And that support extends beyond the classroom.

Through community partnerships and service opportunities—like food drives and access to basic needs resources—students and families are connected to the help they need, while also learning the value of giving back. HSHMC 2

Across California, charter public schools like Health Sciences High and Middle College are leading the way through the community school model—meeting students where they are and helping them get where they want to go.

A future that once felt out of reach is becoming something real for many teenagers in San Diego--and that's making all the difference.
