Done Deal

By California Charter Schools Association

“This discussion is pretty much a done deal.

---Assemblymember Shirley Weber (D-San Diego)

Well before last Wednesday’s Assembly Education Committee hearing, the fix was in.

For Assemblymembers Patrick O’Donnell (Chairman), Christy Smith, Kevin McCarty, Ash Kalra and Rob Bonta, it was a ‘done deal’ to pass extreme and divisive bills that rip options and opportunities away from families that need them most. It was a ‘done deal’ to advance poisonous bills that would close high-performing schools and trap vulnerable students within schools failing to meet their needs. And it was a ‘done deal’ to ignore the pleas of hundreds of families who traveled from across the state to the Capitol to speak out in defense of public schools that are helping kids from all backgrounds learn and thrive.

Politics was the central concern for these members. Asm. Shirley Weber’s question tells us what wasn’t:

“What is not being asked today: What is best for our children?”
