Success of Charter Public Schools Stands Out on Latest Distinguished Schools List

By Vanessa Alessi

Last month, we got even more undeniable proof that charter public schools are helping students from all backgrounds and zipcodes achieve incredible academic results.

Thirty-one charters were named a 2019 Distinguished School by the California Department of Education. The award recognizes schools for their outstanding programming that has lead to exceptional student performance or closing the achievement gap for two straight academic years.

We want to congratulate the students, teachers, leaders and parents that are helping these charter schools thrive! You can see a full list of them here.

To put this recognition into perspective, charter public schools made up nearly 20 percent of the list (!!!). That’s pretty remarkable considering that they account for just over 10 percent of public schools in our state!

As successful charter schools in California face a relentless assault from hostile opponents and lawmakers, it’s critical that we remember the real and lasting impact these schools are having in communities.
