For many California families, back-to-school season is a season of hope—but also of sacrifice.

Parents are stretching household budgets to buy backpacks, notebooks, new shoes, and everything their children need to start the year with confidence. They're adjusting work schedules, arranging childcare, and wondering what this school year will bring.

Behind every first day of school is a simple dream: that this year will create new opportunities for their child.

For California families, education has always represented more than academics. It is the pathway to opportunity, economic mobility, and a brighter future—the promise that each generation can build on the sacrifices of the one before it.

That is why our state's new budget is worth celebrating.

At a time when families are sending their children back to school, our state has made one of the largest investments in public education in California history, increasing funding to record levels.

That translates into more resources for classrooms. Greater support for students with disabilities. Additional investments for English learners, literacy, career preparation, immigrant students, and the educators who dedicate their lives to helping children succeed. Schools will also receive significant one-time flexible funding that can be used to meet local needs and help students thrive.

These investments will impact classrooms across California.

During this year's budget discussions, some proposals would have significantly reduced funding for charter public schools, putting at risk resources that students rely on every day. Instead, California chose a different path.

The final budget protects funding for charter school students, preserves critical support that helps many charter public schools maintain safe, high-quality learning environments, and includes stronger accountability measures to ensure public dollars are spent responsibly and transparently.

That is good news for families.

Charter schools are public schools. They educate hundreds of thousands of California students, many of whom are multilingual learners, first-generation college-bound students, or children from communities that have historically had fewer educational opportunities.

Parents who choose a charter public school simply want their children to attend a school where they feel supported, challenged, and inspired to reach their full potential.

They are not asking for special treatment.

They are asking for fairness.

This year's budget reflects that principle.

As another school year begins, parents will continue doing what they have always done: packing lunches before sunrise, cheering at school performances and events, and encouraging their children to dream bigger than they ever imagined possible.

Our responsibility as policymakers is to match that hope with meaningful investment.

Because every backpack walking into a California classroom this fall carries more than books.

It carries a family's dreams and the sacrifices parents make every day.

And it carries the belief that education remains the most powerful path to a brighter future.

This year's budget reminds us that those dreams are worth investing in.
