As Governor Newsom and legislators continue working on a safe and phased school reopening, educators across the state are seeking ways to strengthen their distance learning programs and stem student learning loss.
To help charter school educators at all levels deliver for their students in this moment, we’ve included vital breakout sessions in the programming at this year’s California Charter Schools Virtual Conference, being held March 15-19.
Two breakout sessions are especially timely for charter school educators who are working tirelessly—and admirably-- to provide a quality education for students in the face of a durable pandemic and uncertainty around reopening:
What Works Online: Lessons from 20 Charters About Online Teaching
When: Wednesday, March 17, 9:00 a.m.-9:50 a.m.
Session summary: Hear from charter school principals as well as a professor from the Berkeley research team about what’s worked to engage diverse students online, along with impediments to student and teacher motivation.
Presented by:
- Bruce Fuller, Professor of Education and Public Policy at UC Berkeley
- Nicole Moraru, 2nd grade teacher at Rocklin Academy Gateway
- Leslie Shaw-McGee, Principal at ICEF Innovation
Highlights of Exemplary Practices at Nonclassroom-Based Charters
When: Thursday, March 18, 9:00 a.m.-9:50 a.m.
Session summary: Wrongly, nonclassroom-based charter public schools have come under fire over the past few years. Instead of criticizing these flexible and innovative schools, we should be learning from them. Join CCSA staff and educators from NCB charter schools to learn about instructional and operational best practices that can be applied at any school.
Presented by:
- Jonathan Slakey, Director of Data Analysis, California Charter Schools Association
