The voice of California’s charter school movement

The Future Starts Here: Meet the 2025 Bragato Scholarship Winners

By CCSA Staff

A group of remarkable charter high school graduates—who have overcome adversity, given back to their communities, and are now headed to college—received the 2025 Susan Steelman Bragato Scholarship from CCSA this year.

This year’s scholarship recipients attend charter public schools across California and reflect the incredible diversity of the Golden State, with students tracing their roots to countries including Eritrea, Iran, Mexico, and the Philippines. Each scholar is driven by a desire to make a difference — whether in business, art, or healthcare. Notably, most of the recipients plan to major in healthcare-related fields as they begin their post-secondary journeys.

“The 2025 Bragato Scholarship recipients embody the academic success that charter public schools bring to K-12 education in California, helping produce the next generation of experts, skilled workers, and changemakers,” said Myrna Castrejón, CCSA President and CEO. “These scholars are on a mission to heal and uplift communities, and the state’s charter school movement stands proudly behind these amazing young people who hold the key to a brighter, more compassionate future for all of us.”

A recent CCSA study shows that California charter public schools — both classroom- and flex-based models — are sending significantly more socioeconomically disadvantaged, Latino, and Black students to UCs and CSUs compared to the statewide public school average.

Each 2025 Bragato Scholarship recipient will receive $2,000 to help offset the cost of their first year of college.

The scholarship is named after Susan Steelman Bragato, co-founder of California’s first charter public school and founder of the California Network of Educational Charters, the precursor to CCSA. Her legacy lives on through this impactful scholarship program.

Please join CCSA in congratulating these inspiring young people:
