Chairman Patrick O’Donnell is Being Dishonest About His Anti-Charter Bill

By California Charter Schools Association

“If you’re a good charter operator, there is nothing for you to worry about in this bill [AB 1505].”

—Assembly Education Committee Chairman Patrick O’Donnell

We know Asm. Patrick O’Donnell has no reservations about pursuing the poisonous, anti-charter policies of the California Teachers Association. But he also apparently has no reservations in using tactics right out of their playbook either: propose an extreme and divisive bill and then dishonestly brand it as being harmless (or good!) for kids and families that it actually hurts.

The harsh reality of O’Donnell’s AB 1505 is that it would eliminate appeals for charter public schools at the county and state level, denying families alternative avenues to make their voices heard in support of public schools that are better meeting the needs of kids. Under his bill, districts could also deny new or existing charter public schools, regardless of years of academic success or community need for better public school options.

Why is O’Donnell refusing to be honest about the true impact of his bill on the most vulnerable students in our state?
