Charter Schools Leave Their Mark in New U.S. News Best Schools Rankings

By California Charter Schools Association

U.S. News and World Report recently launched its Best Schools rankings for elementary and middle schools across the country. And while the rankings are new, here’s what’s not: California’s charter public schools leaving their mark.

Three of the top 10 elementary schools in California are charter schools, which includes Hart Vision Award winner Yu Ming Charter School. You can learn more about Yu Ming and its head of school by watching this inspiring video from last year’s CCSA Conference.

As for middle schools, charter public schools accounted for nearly 15% of the top 100 performing schools in our state. In fact, Petaluma Accelerated Charter was ranked as the top middle school in our state!

The annual rankings evaluate more than 61,000 schools across the country, weighing the latest performance data on state tests for reading and math proficiency and socioeconomic demographics. This formula resulted in, as U.S. News notes, a rankings list of schools that are all high-achieving and succeed in educating all their students.

Earlier this year, charter public schools turned in another strong performance on the annual Best High Schools rankings, making up 30 of the top 100 public high schools in our state.

From elementary to middle to high school, the rankings offer even more indisputable proof that CA charter schools at all grade levels are ensuring that students have the foundational academic skills necessary to excel now and in the future.

Here’s a list of charter schools that landed in the top 10 for elementary and middle schools:

Top Elementary Schools

  • #5-White Oaks Elementary
  • #7-Yu Ming Charter School
  • #9-Canyon Charter Elementary

Top Middle Schools

  • #1-Petaluma Accelerated Charter
  • #8-Bullis Charter
