The voice of California’s charter school movement

Continued Success in the Face of Extreme Opposition

By California Charter Schools Association

Even with the California Teachers Association and Sacramento politicians intent on waging war on their very existence, charter public schools continue to rack up the academic ribbons and trophies!

In just over a month:

  • 32 charter public schools were named 2019 California Distinguished Schools. The recognition goes to schools for achieving exceptional student performance or closing the achievement gap for two consecutive years.
  • Mare Island Technology Academy and Renaissance Arts Academy, both Distinguished Schools, were further recognized for having exemplary career technical education and arts programs.
  • Quail Lake Environmental Charter School, Sanger Academy Charter School, and Santiago Charter Middle School were all named as “Schools to Watch” in 2019 by the California Department of Education. The recognition goes to schools demonstrating academic rigor, responsiveness to student needs, and equity and inclusion in their practice to produce great results for students.
  • Quail Lake Environmental Charter School was named a Green Ribbon School by the California Department of Education, earning the highest honor in the category by being recognized as a Green Achiever. The award honors schools and districts for conserving resources while promoting health and environmental literacy.
  • Granada Hills Charter High School and El Camino Real Charter High School continued their dominance at the California Academic Decathlon, with another first and second place finish.

On top of all that recognition and decathlon dominance, we’ve seen great recent stories highlighting how a kids-first approach is helping students well beyond their K-12 years:

  • New data shows that alumni from some of America’s largest charter public school networks, including KIPP, Aspire, and Alliance College-Ready Public Schools, are graduating college at two to four times the rate of their peers at traditional public schools.
  • Students at Shasta Summit are receiving a personalized education that’s helping prepare them for college and the jobs of tomorrow

Despite the steady stream of recent success, the California Teachers Association continues to eagerly pursue poisonous bills that threaten the very existence of quality charter public schools like this. With each passing day, CTA and their allies in the legislature make it perfectly clear that they want to put politics ahead of kids.
